Some useful advice for you beer drinkers out there. Leave that 6-pack of tasteless, poor quality lager in the shop and have a couple of these instead. More taste, more pleasure, more satisfaction. You won’t regret it.

Cheers!

Amoigos. This is is a new aquintance that i had the pleasure of getting to know during easter. There was something appealing about the bottle that that made me choose this one, eave though i dont care much for the mane stream mexincan styled beers you can find here in Finland. The fact that it says tequila flavourd beer on the label med me both excited and terrified at the same time. probably the reason why this bugger ended up besides my beloved London pride in the shopping basket. The coulor of the beer is not very pleasing i think. In the picture it actually looks darker and better than it did in reality.

The colour was pretty much Finnish lager like. (If you have not figured it out by now, being compared in any way to a Finnish lager will pretty much destroy any chance a beer has of getting good ratings). In other words the colour was not pleasing(Already at this point I was wondering why did I buy this). Since i was at a party when drinking this I dd not bother to pour this one into a glass. This feels like i may not have given this one a proper chance, and i might not have. But to be honest with this thing it would not have made a diffrence.

The smell was light lager like with a hint of some kind of sweetness embedded in there somewhere.

Finally we get to the tasting. From the article so far you may already have figured out where this is going but let me tell you.. Its worse than that! Already when the first drops hit your tongue you can tell that there is something terribly wrong here. To put it simply, this is not a beer! It is refreshing and kind of tasty but its not a beer. Its light, its sweet, its sour all in one, its more lika a Bacardi breezer than a beer. And where are the tequila flavors that were promised on the label? Well I sure could not find them, and this was partly why i bought this thing. Now I had some serious doubts from the beginning with Amigos but it still let me down, and it wasn’t a soft landing. I cant even recommend this to someone who loves mixed drinks like breezers. If the label says beer then you at least expect there to be some malty and hoppy flavors.

All and all, if this was marketed as something else than a beer, then i guess it could be ok. But as a beer it gets no points from me. Beer lovers stay away!

Cheers!

As promised here are the thoughts on Newcastle brown ale or...

As promised here are the thoughts on Newcastle brown ale or Newkie brown as its called.

For me this is a true classic and I find myself drinking one of these every now and then. This is the beer that, at least in Finland can be found everywhere. This means that if the pub does’t have a descent beer in there selection they usually at least have the brown stuff. Now this may sound like Newkie isn’t much of of a treat, and that has been the case for me for a while now. I’ve felt its an ok beer and a good backup if I cant find anything good or interesting. However, this is not the whole truth, When you really taste it and think about there is more to this one.

Starting with the aesthetics of course. Now its hard to judge the looks of this beer. I’m so used to looking at the bottle, logo, and posters that it has started to feel as somewhat of an standard pub interior decor. The bottle looks simple and resembles the standard cheap lager bottles we have here in Finland.(I actually don’t mind the design of the Finnish bottle its beautiful in they’re simplicity. Designd by Tapio Wirkkala and as such a finnish design icon really. But the content of these bottles have ruined them for me.)

The colour of the Newkie is something that i really like about this beer. The colour is a dark golden amber and for me, very close to the perfect colour for a beer. If you pour it into a glass you dont get much head, now usually this would not bother me but since the colour is so beutiful this would really be lika a piece of art if it were to have a thicker, creamier head. Now some of you may think, sure it make lots of foam, theres lots of head on the pint in the pictures and advertisements. But for some reason this is not the case for me. Must be doing somethin wrong.

Then the to tasting. At first sip I find that the Newkie resembles a typical British bitter. This first experience however quickly turns into something different. After you get you mouthful the taste turns into something much more sweet and rounded. Theres a small hint of syrup in there. There is some typical brittish hoppiness butt not its very settle and not sharp at all. I remeber from years back, I used to think f this beer as a very easy beer to drink and to like. Back then i didnt enjoy strong sharp hops as much as I do today. Big IPA fan today. this beer may not be a favorate for the IPA or even the someone who loves standard bitters like London Pride but it feels like its a beer for everyone. I have a very hard time imagining anyone hating this beer. It has all the basic malty and hoppy flavour that you expect from an good ale without having anything too strong or sharp and at the same time being slightly sweet and syrupy. I have never heard anyone saying that that they dont like this beer. On the other hand I have never heard of it being anyone’s absolute favorite either.

As a conclusion, this beer is a beautiful beer, with a descent amount of taste. Its a good beer all in all, but there’s nothing there to give you that wow factor. Its a safe choice that can never go wrong. And thanks to the excellent availability, its the perfect backup if you cant find any of your favorites.

We are currently in a hectic period of tasting and trying new brews. All this to help you find your way in the jungle called beer. There are a lot of great beers out there, but there are also a lot of bad ones. So if you want to keep away from harms way please stay tuned. While waiting for more, you can find a perfect example of a beer you want to keep away from at dloef.tumble.com

Cheers!

Murphy’s the little sister of that famous Irish stout....

Murphy’s the little sister of that famous Irish stout.
What can you say about this black beauty? Is it a pure Guinness clone or is there something more to it?

The first thing you experience is of course what you see, and you can tell from the picture that with this particular pint the estetics are far from pleasing. I guess Murphys does not have the same strict rules as her bigger sister on how the pint should be poured and presented, but I can tell this is not the way it should look. I’m not saying that bartending is easy, but come on, its not rocket science to pour a proper pint. Be there pefect pint rules or not.

The colour is solid black with a creamy dense white head just like Guinness. No surprises there.

Once the disapointment of the presentation has settled, I tried to move on with the tasting. Next up the smell. I cant say that I can detect any diffrens compared to guinness on this one. There’s the typical stingy roasted malty smell that first hits your nose.

The first sip of a beer is for me the most important moment when it comes to judging the beer. The look is also important but a beer is a drink and as such the taste has to come first. When it comes to beer I belive the first sip is that vital first impression that you will remember and this impression will stick with you. In stouts like this there is of course a lot of head and the first sip usually consists mostly of foam. The Murphys foam is slightly less creamy than that of the famous big sister. They are still very similiar though. Once you work you way down the glass you start to taste the typical dark stout flavours, the highly roasted malts hints of coffee and eaven a trace of chocolate. The hops in this beer are were there supposed to be even if they are well hidden behind the strong bitterness of the roasted malts.

All and all I think this is a good basic stout and if you’r a fan of Guinness you can’t go wrong with this one. There are slight diffrences between the two, but they are so small that I’m not sure I would be able to tell them appart int a blind test. A solid good performance from Murphy’s, but I prefer the big sister.

Rating 3/5

Here we go my first ever Tumblr post. And what a...

Hello world!

Here we go my first ever Tumblr post. And what a way to begin.

To my positive surprise i found this treasure yesterday at the local supermarket. As always with Fullers my hopes were high and my expectations even higher. So did it live up to those expectations? Well let me tell you it certainly did. An awesome experience from first sip to last drop.

I guess I’m supposed to give you some tasting notes now. i guess this is the challenge when it comes to trying and rating beers. I mean anyone can just drink them right. I always found tasting notes of wines and beers to be one of the most pretentious things someone can write so thats why I will try o deliver these notes in a very simple and “blue collar” manner.

Obviously the first thing that you experience is the smell of the beer. It smells light, somewhat fruity and it resembles the Scandinavian mead. A very positive first impression. The colour is typical for a British ale beautiful medium dark amber, that makes you crave the beer even more. Now then the taste. It may sound unimpressive but there actually is nothing special or spectacular about the taste. But it is in some way a perfect balance between hoppiness and maltiness. Its bitter but not too bitter it has a solid body but its still light and refreshing. You could describe this beer as a slightly lighter and more refreshing version of London Pride. To conclude I think this can be a perfect choice for those warm summer eavnings if you want an ale with a little more taste than an other favorite of mine Discovery. All in all a great beer, and at only 3,5% you can by all means have more that just one.

Rating 4/5
